Having a fat monitor is nice, but if you've tried to design applications for smaller screen Macs, you know what a problem it can be. No matter how hard you may guess at a dialog's location, the size of a window, or the number of menus that will fit across the menu bar, you always seems to be off. So that is why I wrote MiniScreen, an INIT/cdev (only for Macs with Color QuickDraw) that you place in your System Folder. To make it one of the first INITs that your Mac will start up, put a few spaces or control characters in front of its filename.
MiniScreen changes your color monitor's desktop size to that of a dinky, nine-inch monitor after your restart your Macintosh. After restarting, open your Control Panel to reveal the MiniScreen cdev icon. Select it to bring up a couple of switches and buttons that allow you to customize the way MiniScreen runs.
Throw the knife switches to turn MiniScreen on or off, and to disable or enable the display of the MiniScreen icon when you start up your Mac. Press down on the pop-up menu at the bottom of the display to select a standard screen size for a variety of different screens, or enter your own values in the text boxes for a custom size.
While starting your Mac, press and hold the Option key to choose a smaller desktop size to any dimension you desire! Just move the mouse around, and MiniScreen traces the outline of the new screen, showing the dimensions on the menu bar. Press the mouse button to set the desired size.
Your Macintosh then proceeds with the normal startup sequence, only you now have a custom screen! Best of all, MiniScreen uses the new size each time you restart your Mac until you change it again.
To prevent MiniScreen from miniaturizing your screen, hold down the shift key during startup.
